(6 May 2026) The session at Charleston Asia delivered by Dr. Chetan Sudhakar Sonowane on the topic titled “Assessing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based tools on library services and scholarly publishing” tried to cover the potential of AI based tools and its application in libraries. Its usefulness in the library is being explored. AI tools are evolving day by day and can change the way the library functions today. I tried to explore its use in the libraries and how a library should prepare itself for the future. The session covered the possible use and also introduced the attendees to the emerging AI tools which can be beneficial in scholarly publishing activities. The presentation was appreciated by one of the other presenters after the session was over.
The session description in the Conference Whova App is “Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into library systems has been a topic of interest for libraries. Generative AI based tools are useful to libraries as it helps in creating new text, image or any other type of media. Generative AI based tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, or Google Gemini create text upon prompting a query. Libraries have been early adopters of AI in library systems- this ranges from primitive Chatbots to Recommender systems, and now its application in Cataloguing and Classification system is being explored. We can say that implementation of AI is still in its nascent stage. While there is a concern among library professionals about AI impact on employment and resource allocation. AI tools like ChatGPT and Grammarly are popular among library users. The positive and negative aspects of Generative AI tools like ChatGPT have been debated, and there have been several lawsuits filed against it. In academics AI powered tools like Scite, Elicit and Researchrabbit can transform writing the traditional literature reviews. AI based tools can greatly help in writing literature reviews in a short time span, in depth and with speed. AI applications were available before, also, but the recent development in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLM) have changed the dimension of AI application. While implementing AI, factors such as user privacy, funding, and staff expertise and alignment with the goal of the institution is important.”
