(29 February 2016, Farmington Hills, Mich.) Gale, a leading provider of library resources and part of Cengage Learning, has reached a major milestone in its quest to improve discoverability and researcher workflow, completing indexing work with Google. Researchers can now easily discover scholarly content from Gale and its partners on Google or Google Scholar, through a pathway that leads directly to their institution or local library.
“We know researchers begin searching in Google before they are ready to delve into their library’s resources. With this collaboration we’re making it easier for them to quickly and easily connect with quality content, and in the workflow they’re accustomed to,” said Paul Gazzolo, senior vice president and general manager for Gale. “This is only one step in our approach to improving discovery. We’ve also increased our work with library discovery services, and have initiatives underway to put library resources on the student path with the integration of Google Apps for Education in our products, and making Gale primary sources available to faculty and students from within Cengage Learning’s MindTap e-learning platform.”
Google Scholar, a free search engine for scholarly research often used by students and instructors in higher education, has indexed full text scholarly content from Gale Academic OneFile, an online resource that aggregates peer-reviewed articles from the world’s leading journals covering physical and social sciences, technology, medicine, engineering, literature, and more. Users beginning their research in Google Scholar or Google can find content from Gale and its partners, and subsequently be taken to the full-text of an article (if authenticated users of a subscribed library) or directed to an abstract and information on how to access the article through their institution or local library. This integration helps researchers more easily discover Gale content and will bring more users directly into the library.
In addition, Gale has integrated Google Apps for Education – Gmail, Classroom, Drive, Docs, and more – with more than 70 of its products, making it easy for schools to leverage Gale library content directly in the classroom.
