(22 Dec 2024) A deepening crisis of academic fraud in Indonesian and Thai universities has revealed professors and lecturers paying for publications in predatory journals. In Indonesia, eleven professors at Lambung Mangkurat University lost their titles after failing to meet publication requirements and bribing evaluation team members. The scandal extends beyond ULM, with experts suggesting it could affect half of Indonesia’s professors. In Thailand, the problem emerged in August 2023, leading to investigations of 109 lecturers across 33 universities. Thai authorities identified five websites selling research papers, with most buyers being public university lecturers. Both countries are now implementing stricter verification processes.
