(9 Apr 2024) It has been 10 years since researcher Haruko Obokata defended her research in front of hundreds of reporters and TV crew at an Osaka hotel, claiming that STAP cells did exist. In the months that followed, however, nobody could reproduce the cells according to her protocol. She was booted from her job in December of that year, and has since disappeared from the spotlight and public memory. But 10 years on, structural problems that led to the scandal persist, leaving ample room for researchers to tamper with research data, experts say.
