(23 Oct 2025) The Indian government’s university rankings, known as the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), have become the defining benchmark for excellence in Indian higher education a decade after they were launched, according to a recent report.
Introduced by the Ministry of Education in 2015, NIRF has transformed how universities and colleges are evaluated, shifting focus from mere reputation to measurable performance.
Over the same period, Indian higher education has become more globally competitive, as seen in the rise of institutions in global rankings, and its research ecosystem has shown substantial progress, notes the analysis by business consultancy firm KPMG based on 10 years of NIRF data.
