(1 October 2014) Today, Outernet launched in full beta. Outernet styles itself as Humanity’s Public Library.
Founded in February 2014, Outernet broadcasts the most important content from the web from satellites for free. Users can access the Outernet signal using a homemade receiver built from widely available components, instructions for which are available on the Outernet website.
Outernet says that it takes the best of the web and broadcasts it from space for every human on Earth. Currently much of Southeast Asia is outside its footprint, but that will change says Outernet.
The broadcast content is determined by anyone who chooses to vote on the most important things to share with humanity. Outernet repurposes broadcast satellite TV equipment and offers instructions on how to build a DIY-receiver. Once a receiver is configured, Outernet’s content can be displayed and accessed by any WiFi-enabled device. And it’s free to use.
