(13 Oct 2026) The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has launched a national scientific journal publishing group as part of efforts to develop world-class scientific journals and increase the international visibility of Chinese research.
The new organization, Beijing Zhongke Journal Publishing & Media Group Co, will seek to address longstanding challenges in China’s scientific publishing sector, including fragmented resources, small-scale operations and limited global influence.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Beijing, Lu Fangjun, director of the CAS Bureau of Basic Capacity for Science and Technology, said these structural challenges had restricted the ability of domestic journals to disseminate research and expand their international influence.
“The group’s launch marks a substantive strategic shift from scattered, institute-run journal operations to fully integrated and intensive publishing. It will pool high-quality journal resources across CAS and even the whole country to create economies of scale and strengthen cluster advantages,” Lu said.
The group will adopt a publishing model that combines academic expertise with market-oriented operations. It will take responsibility for production and dissemination activities, including editing, proofreading, typesetting and international distribution.
According to Lu, 68 journals launched by CAS this year are already operating under the model, using the publisher’s independently developed in-house platform to manage production and dissemination. These include the Data Express series, which is designed to support emerging research paradigms.
