(25 Aug 2025) The Delhi High Court has ordered a ban on the shadow library Sci-Hub and its mirror websites in India on August 19, 2025, directed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) to notify Internet Service Providers to block access to these websites within 24 hours. The order was passed by Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora in a copyright infringement suit filed by leading academic publishers Elsevier, Wiley Periodicals, and the American Chemical Society.
The plaintiffs filed an application seeking directions against Elbakyan for breach of her undertaking dated 24 December 2020. Notably, she had earlier assured the court that no new articles or publications copyrighted by the plaintiffs would be uploaded on Sci-Hub. However, the plaintiffs alleged that this undertaking was violated as new copyrighted works were made available both on Sci-Hub and on its newly created sister website, Sci-Net.
