(9 Mar 2021) In a landmark agreement, the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Tokyo University of Science (TUS) proudly announce their collaboration to usher in a new era of open access publishing in Japan. Over the next five years, this agreement will bring the possibility for all publications by TUS researchers in ACS journals to be made available completely open access, bringing greater visibility to the scientific contributions of the university’s researchers.
“Our mission is to transform TUS into ‘a university acknowledged by the world,’ becoming a research base which leads the world from basic to applied research disciplines,” says Tokyo University of Science’s vice president, Hiroki Fujishiro, Ph.D. “We are confident this read and publish agreement with ACS will create more opportunities for our researchers’ achievements to be shared with and to broaden the global scientific community, resulting in a positive scientific contribution to the world.”
In addition to the possibility to make their articles available open access, scientists from TUS will benefit from access to ACS’ more than 75 premier journals in all areas of chemistry, as well as the newsmagazine Chemical & Engineering News.
“We are delighted to be embarking upon this partnership with TUS,” says James Milne, Ph.D., president, ACS Publications Division. “The university’s researchers are performing world-class science, and this agreement will help to speed that research to the rest of the global chemistry community.”
This partnership is a deepening of ACS’ commitment to supporting the transition to open science in a way that best serves the needs of authors. Read and publish agreements like these allow academic and research institutions to lead that change, finding an innovative way of meeting both the research and publishing needs of their scientists.
“More institutions are pursuing read and publish agreements, recognizing that publishing open access brings benefits for their scientists,” says Peter Hoving, regional sales director for the Asia-Pacific region at ACS Publications. “I’m proud to see TUS leading the way for other institutions in the region and look forward to the publications that this collaboration will bring forth. Both Kinokuniya Company and SmartEd were instrumental in securing this partnership between TUS and ACS Publications.”
