(18 November 2017) The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library, recently sponsored Ruth Pagell’s trip to Asia to speak to librarians, faculty, students and administrators about university rankings.
Her talk to HKUST on 9 November, World University Rankings: How to be Number One together with the powerpoint presentation, are streamed here: http://stream.ust.hk/service/watch.php?stream=lib/o/991012552668403412.mp4
After Hong Kong, Ruth gave a similar talk in Singapore to an audience of librarians, students and NUS faculty and staff. The talk, with a Singapore flavour, was presented by The Library Association of Singapore and the National University of Singapore.
The large turnout in both venues of a wide range of people reflects the effect these rankings are having on academia and the tug of war between focusing on teaching and local needs and the desire of everyone to be highly ranked.
