(30 Mar 2021) Applications are invited for appointment as Head of Archives and Special Collections (at the rank of Associate Librarian) in the University Libraries (Ref.: 503629) to commence as soon as possible on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal.
Applicants should have a postgraduate qualification in archives/special collections management and experience in a university or institutional archives/special collections, OR a postgraduate qualification in library management with specialization in archives/special collections, OR a graduate degree in History or other appropriate disciplines with significant experience in a university or institutional archive/special collections; along with at least 8 years’ experience in increasingly responsible positions within the profession of archives, special collections and/or related employment in teaching/research. A second Master’s degree or a doctoral degree in a related discipline is preferable. Essential qualities include: knowledge of current trends and best practices in the digital scholarship, archival, special collections and records management fields; proven familiarity with best practices in digitization and content management systems; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; a successful track record in leadership, management and supervision including leading through changes and strategic planning; and demonstrated records management experience. The ability to speak Cantonese and to read and write in Chinese, as well as to do translation between Chinese and English is not essential but would be an advantage.
Reporting to the Deputy Librarian/Fung Ping Shan Librarian, the Head of Archives and Special Collections will provide leadership to the Archives and Special Collections and assist in the management of University records. As this is a new role, the successful candidate will be tasked with creating a holistic vision and culture for the Special Collections and University Archives while honoring their individual historical missions and responsibilities. The appointee will provide leadership for the development and ongoing operation of the Archives and Special Collections, particularly by exploiting opportunities for shared services, resources, and processes and staffing, and will also develop comprehensive Records and Information Management (RIM) Services for the University’s Administration. He/She will work closely with the Deputy Librarian/Fung Ping Shan Librarian in seeking external donations and funding for the growth and development of the unit and will actively seek opportunities for local, regional, and international partnerships. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salary tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
