50 years since the first barcode was scanned in a supermarket on June 26, 1974
(2 July 2024) On June 26, 1974, the first product scanned with a barcode was Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum at the Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio. The scanner, developed by Spectra-Physics, decoded the barcode at 8:01 am. This event marked the beginning of automated retail sales and inventory tracking. Find out more here.
