(18 June 2015, Bangkok) Minister of Culture Weera Rojpojanarat says the Fine Arts Department is developing facilities and services of the National Library of Thailand and prison libraries nationwide in response to a royal suggestion by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The Princess made her points at the 16th Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians 2015 in Bangkok last week that the national library should be livened up and develop an easily accesible searching system for visitors.
According to Mr.Weera, more buildings are being added to the National Library, and their construction is due for completion within a year. Once completed, the library’s interior will be modernized and equipped with online searching and reference service systems. It will allow materials to be accessible by electronic means.
The Fine Arts Department is also developing libraries in prisons following in the princess’s footsteps. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn had donated a lot of books to prison libraries, hoping to promote the learning process among prisoners. The books are in Thai and English languages so that prisoners of all nationalities can read. The Department of Corrections and relevant authorities are now helping the Fine Arts Department select good books for the purpose.
