On 27 January 2014, the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS, Japan) and the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa, Switzerland) signed a 5-year collaborative agreement on co-publishing the open access journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM, ISSN 1468-6996). Both NIMS and Empa are the leading materials science research institutes in their respective countries with histories spanning more than half a century.

Mikiko Tanifuji, Head of Scientific Information Office, NIMS says that “a key component of this story is to launch an STAM Europe Editorial Office in addition to our current STAM Headquarters Office. I believe that the launch will help us build a real bridge to Europe, and eventually it will grow to a real global collaboration network that proves an open access practice by researchers for science.”
