(5 November 2013, Alexandria, Va) Alexander Street Press announced today that it has acquired Insight Media, one of the largest distributors of video to the higher education market.
Insight Media, Inc. was founded in 1989 by Jeff Morris and Janet Olshansky to distribute video to educational institutions around the world. Elana Joffe joined in 1990, helping Insight Media become one of the largest such vendors, distributing to more than 90 countries. Most recently, it has become known for its comprehensive dance collection, its nursing and allied health training programs, and for popular and award-winning titles such as American Tongues, Quiet Rage, and Understanding Pina: The Legacy of Pina Bausch. Insight has also produced such titles as the History of Nursing series, How Results Can Be Misleading (the latest addition to Insight’s popular Research Methods collection), and Introduction to Critical Thinking.
Together Alexander Street and Insight Media now hold distribution rights for nearly 50,000 top-quality titles in the higher education market. This arrangement combines Alexander Street’s expertise in the development and sale of large-scale collections of streaming video to libraries with Insight’s expertise in selling individual titles directly to academics. Together, the companies will work closely with Insight’s partners to explore how best to develop new opportunities. The acquisition brings at least 10,000 new streaming titles to the Alexander Street video platform, which is already the largest in higher education.
Said Stephen Rhind-Tutt, president of Alexander Street Press, “I’ve long admired what Jeff, Janet, and Elana have achieved at Insight. They’ve been the largest and best distributor of Alexander Street’s titles in the past few years. We’re all very excited here at the opportunities this opens up!”
Jeff Morris, Janet Olshansky, and Elana Joffe will remain at Insight following the acquisition. Insight Media will continue to operate from New York City.
