Images can be synthesized, videos manipulated, audio mimicked and text written, all by deep-learning neural networks. These can then spread on social media platforms, distorting our shared reality. Digital image forensics expert Hany Farid of UC Berkeley discusses how fake forms of media are created, how they proliferate, the perils they pose and what people can do to guard against them.
