(28 Nov 2024) Billed as a major advancement for Indian academia, the Indian government this week announced the impending launch of its One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) scheme for international academic journals that will promote fair access to what are often extremely pricey but vital academic resources.
The centralised subscription of academic journals aims to address disparities in the availability of scholarly materials, especially in smaller cities and under-represented areas, and encourage interdisciplinary studies.
According to the Ministry of Education, 30 international publishers represented by prestigious names such as Elsevier, Science Direct, Taylor & Francis and Oxford University Press are included in the ONOS list, with more publishers likely to join shortly.
Scheduled to launch on 1 January 2025, the scheme will offer nationwide access to some 13,000 academic journals and research articles.
