(22 Feb 2024) The Hong Kong Baptist University Library invites applications for an energetic, creative and self-motivated individual to lead its Metadata and Cataloguing Services (MCAT) Team, at the rank of Assistant Librarian I. Reporting to the Head of Resource Discovery and Management, the appointee will provide leadership and operational management for the Team.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the operation of the Metadata and Cataloguing Service including goal setting, strategic planning, and performance monitoring;
- Formulate, implement, document and review policies and procedures pertaining to the services and operations of the Team;
- Participate in local and international partnerships related to cooperative metadata projects such as Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO);
- Supervise, train and develop staff of MCAT on metadata standards and best practices;
- Develop and implement metadata strategies that promote the discovery of Library’s unique collections;
- Catalogue materials that require professional experience and expert knowledge of international cataloguing standards and participate in the creation and quality control of bibliographic and authority data;
- Participate in special projects and initiatives as needed.
Requirements:
- A good university degree plus a recognised professional qualification in library and information science (MLIS or equivalent);
- At least 5 years’ relevant experience, preferably in an academic library setting, in managerial, supervisory and leadership role;
- Demonstrated experience with current standards for bibliographic and authority data (e.g. MARC21, Resource Description and Access, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Names and Subjects);
- Good understanding of emerging data models (RDF, BIBFRAME, Schema.org), linked open data vocabularies and ability to provide leadership in the adoption of linked data;
- Extensive experience with integrated library systems (preferably Alma and Primo);
- Excellent communication skills in English and Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua); and
- Experience with Library of Congress reclassification projects would be an advantage.
Reference monthly salary range: HK$54,870 – HK$90,255 (US$1 = HK$7.85)
The initial appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract of three years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to performance review, mutual agreement and availability of funding.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
