(17 Feb 2026) BioOne is proud to report the achievement of a significant milestone in its mission to increase access to scientific research. BioOne’s Subscribe to Open (S2O) pilot has reached its sustainability threshold for 2026, thanks to the critical support of consortia and library partners around the world. This success ensures that the 2026 volumes of 71 titles within the BioOne Complete aggregation will be published Open Access, immediately and in perpetuity. BioOne’s S2O cohort of 54 societies, museums, and research organizations represents the largest number of independent publishers under a single S2O offer to date, including the first S2O publishers from Japan, Kenya, China, and Brazil.
The S2O model leverages existing subscription funds and workflows to enable greater access to scholarly content, while providing meaningful exclusive benefits to supporting institutions. BioOne Complete encompasses 219 titles, and subscription revenue is shared across BioOne’s community of small society and independent publishers, reinvesting precious library funds in nonprofit scholarly communication.
