(27 Apr 2025) Australian political history is littered with well-known and well-worn slogans.
“It’s Time”, the catch-cry of Gough Whitlam’s campaign in 1972, is a notable moment in time.
The phrase, like many election slogans, appeared on T-shirts among other merchandise. And paraphernalia like this from elections gone by might seem like rubbish, tossed into the recycling bin, but to the National Library much of it is part of history.
They have been collecting this material — dubbed “ephemera” — since 1983, including flyers dating back to the 1900s that suggested voters place them “in their hat”.
