Managing the storage environment for archival materials has always been a challenge. Temperature and humidity, insects and fungus conspire to degrade and destroy irreplaceable documents from antiquity to the present day.
Biomist Technology, a Korean company known for its use of bio-friendly materials, is raising its profile in Asia by working with the iGroup to popularize its fumigator technology for archives and cultural property.
With more and more fragile documents and books being archived after digitization, the issue of preservation is an urgent one for archivists and librarians throughout Asia.
Biomist’s Bio-Master, reportedly the world’s first environment friendly fumigator, uses fumigants made from herbs and other plants which are safe for humans but effective against fungi and insects. The fumigation chambers are portable and easily installed by operators who no longer have to worry about the toxic chemicals used in the past.
Biomist now protects the irreplaceable collections of the National Archives of Korea, the National Library of Korea, the National Assembly Library, Saitama Fukusikai, Japan and many others.
