(4 Feb 2026) The National Library of Korea has decided not to accept deposits of books from an AI publisher that releases 9,000 types of books annually. It has also begun research to improve the deposit system to prevent the overflow of AI publications. In the National Assembly, a bill to amend the Library Act has been proposed to address the related issues.
The National Library of Korea announced on the 4th that it has excluded books applied for deposit by an AI publisher that recently sparked controversy, citing reasons such as “edited public materials” and “repetitive content.” This is the first time the central library has not approved the deposit of AI publications. Until now, even if a publication was created by AI, it had to be purchased at the regular price and held by the National Library of Korea and the National Assembly Library, etc., in accordance with the “deposit system.”
