(8 Aug 2023) Malaysia’s reading culture remains vibrant and continues to evolve in response to the changing times, despite the challenges posed by digital distractions.
According to the Unesco’s Institute of Statistics (UIS) report, Malaysia boasts a literacy rate of 94.64%. Meanwhile, based on GlobalData, Malaysia’s literacy rate stood at 95.71% in 2021.
It is said between 2010 and 2021, the literacy rate of Malaysia decreased by 2.74%. On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the literacy rate decreased by 0.4% in 2021.
According to data from the interim study by the National Library of Malaysia (PNM), as of May this year Malaysians read an average of 20 books annually, compared to 15 in 2014.
PNM’s primary objective is to promote literacy and reading, providing access to information through a vast collection of resources that cover diverse subjects, enabling the public to explore various topics and expand their knowledge.
