“Our people are avid readers,” said Thant Thu Zar Maung of the Myanmar Book Aid and Preservation Foundation, as she showed Beyond Access a small school library bustling with children in June. “We just need more to read.”
The school in Thanlyn, a town 30 kilometers east of the capital, Yangon, is run by Buddhist monks. Over 660 boys and girls study here at the primary and middle school levels. Its one-room school library, which is open to the public, is one of thousands of self-sustaining community libraries across Myanmar.
