(21 February 2016) Legal deposit legislation has ensured that the National Library of Australia has collected Australia’s print publications for more than 100 years.
Digital history was made on 17 February 2016 as amendments to the legal deposit provisions in the Copyright Act 1968 came into effect, extending the legislation to capture the online publishing landscape. The Civil Law and Justice Legislation Amendment Bill 2014 was passed in August 2015.
The Library will now collect electronic books, journals, magazines, newsletters, maps, sheet music and websites to preserve them for the community and future generations.
Visitors to the Library will be able to access the collection of electronic publications in the reading rooms later in 2016.
Publishers can now upload their electronic publications directly using the edeposit service.
